Parathyroidectomy

  • A parathyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove one or more of the parathyroid glands when they are overactive or diseased.
  • The parathyroid glands regulate calcium levels in the body, and disorders are often detected during routine blood tests.
  • Symptoms of parathyroid disorders may include elevated calcium levels, kidney stones, bone loss, fatigue, and muscle weakness.
  • Surgical treatment varies depending on the specific condition and may involve removing a single gland or multiple glands.
  • At Fort Worth ENT & Sinus, experienced surgeons perform parathyroidectomy and other thyroid and parathyroid procedures using advanced surgical techniques.

At the Fort Worth Thyroid Center  surgeries for disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands vary according to the disorder being treated. For example, a Parathyroidectomy is the surgical removal of one or all of the parathyroid glands. In addition, partial removal of a thyroid gland for which diagnostic testing is not fully informative is different than removal of the entire gland or associated lymph nodes for cancer. Our surgeons equipped to perform thyroidectomies, parathyroidectomies, minimally invasive thyroid surgery, and many other ear, nose, and throat conditions.

The thyroid gland on the lower neck produces hormones that control metabolism. Benign or malignant thyroid tumors can develop and be seen as lumps on the neck. Malignant tumors can cause hoarseness, lymph node enlargement, pain, and difficulty breathing. The parathyroid glands are much smaller, arranged around the thyroid gland.  They are responsible for calcium metabolism, and disorders of these glands may be picked up on routine medical checkups.

FAQs

  • What symptoms indicate the need for a parathyroidectomy?
Ongoing fatigue, bone discomfort, kidney stones, and high calcium levels on blood tests are common indicators.
  • How do I prepare for parathyroid surgery to ensure a smooth procedure?
Follow fasting instructions, review medications with your doctor, and arrange support for the first day after surgery.
  • What are the differences between traditional, minimally invasive, and scarless parathyroidectomy?
Traditional surgery examines all glands, while minimally invasive approaches target a specific one. Scarless techniques avoid visible incisions but aren’t suitable for every case.
  • How long does it take to fully recover from a parathyroidectomy?
Most people feel better within a week and return fully to routine activities within two to three weeks.
  • What are the potential risks and long-term effects of parathyroid surgery?
Risks include temporary low calcium levels, minor infection, or voice changes. Long-term complications are rare with experienced surgical care.
